OCMS was delighted to welcome Dr. John Lennox as our guest speaker at Chapel recently, where he shared his profound insights developed over 30 years into the Book of Revelation. This Bible ook, together with his scientific mind, has prompted him to publish his latest book God, AI and the End of History that uses the messages in Revelations to shed light on the developments taking shape in today’s troubled times.
Building on decades of study and engagement with both theology and science, Dr. John C. Lennox brought a rich perspective to his Chapel sermon, unpacking key themes from the Book of Revelation. As an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and a leading Christian apologist, he offered thought-provoking reflections on God’s eternal nature, the promise of Christ’s return, and the relevance of Revelation in today’s world.
In his sermon, Dr. Lennox emphasised the significance of the titles attributed to God in Revelation, particularly the phrase “who is, who was, and who is to come.” This designation underscores the eternal nature of God, highlighting His presence throughout all of time—past, present, and future. Dr. Lennox pointed out that this title appears both at the beginning and the end of Revelation, framing the entire narrative with a reminder of God’s unchanging and everlasting sovereignty.
A central theme of the sermon was the repeated emphasis on the “coming” of Jesus Christ. Dr. Lennox noted that the anticipation of Christ’s return is a thread that runs throughout Revelation, serving as a source of hope and encouragement for believers. He discussed how this promise of Jesus’ return is meant to inspire faithfulness and perseverance among Christians, reassuring them of God’s ultimate plan and the fulfillment of His promises.
Dr. Lennox also delved into the structure of Revelation, discussing how the book’s opening and closing passages mirror each other, creating a literary framework that reinforces its key messages. This intentional design serves to remind readers of the consistency of God’s character and His plans for humanity. By examining these structural elements, Dr. Lennox encouraged the congregation to appreciate the depth and intentionality of the biblical text.
Throughout his sermon, Dr. Lennox’s reflections on Revelation provided rich insights, blending theological depth with practical application. His ability to unpack complex themes in an accessible manner left a lasting impact on all who attended, deepening our understanding of God’s eternal nature and the profound hope found in the promise of Christ’s return.
For those interested in exploring these themes further, Dr. Lennox has also discussed the interplay of theology, ethics, and artificial intelligence, outlining how the Book of Revelation foreshadows advances in AI and current and future threats to human agency. This perspective offers a contemporary lens through which to understand the enduring relevance of Revelation in today’s world.

Building on these insights, his forthcoming book, God, AI and the End of History, takes this exploration even further. In it, he argues that Revelation holds the key to understanding our future, particularly in an age where Artificial Super Intelligence could emerge as a force that deceives the world and opposes the rule of Christ.

God, AI and the End of History
Understanding the Book of Revelation in an Age of Intelligent Machines
A fresh interpretation of Revelation for the 21st century, exploring the connections between John’s visions and the terrifying prospect of an Artificial Super Intelligence that emerges to deceive the world and oppose the rule of Christ. This book advances reasons why we need to take very seriously the possibility that a supernatural power opposed to God is using technology.
Revelation promises to do two things: fill our hearts with praise to God, and simultaneously prepare for God’s inevitable cataclysmic intervention in this world to judge evil righteously at the return of Christ. It will be published by SPCK in July 2025.
