Doing mission in vulnerability is not simply a strategy. It is a practice rooted in the vulnerable nature of God, seen in the freedom of creatures and in God’s self-emptying in Christ. Perhaps the best way to reflect on mission in vulnerability is through the image of friendship. This lecture will reflect on how a number of missiologists–among them Claude-Marie Barbour, David Bosch, Thomas and Elizabeth Brewster, Dana Robert, and Samuel Ewell–have employed the image of relationship, bonding, and friendship in their work.

Cara will share her own story of coming to understand matters of vulnerability in mission by working and living with children-at-risk in inner city, urban contexts, and will then explore several theological paradigms that ground her approach to ministry to, for, and with children-at-risk.

In this lecture, we focus on learning from the communal God. To be “by the spirit” is to be in community, both with God and with one another. The trinitarian God is looked at as a model of internal relationality as well as filled with love.
