We are delighted to welcome Angus Crichton as the first-ever Director of Regnum Books. This is the year in which our Executive Director, Paul Bendor-Samuel, is able to hand over the reins of Regnum to someone with considerable experience and passion for publishing—particularly research emerging from the Majority World. This marks an important new chapter for Regnum, and we could not be more pleased that Angus is joining us at such a significant moment in its development.
For some time, we have been looking for the right person to help shape the future of Regnum Books—someone with both deep publishing experience and a passion for the global Church. In Angus, we have found exactly that.
Angus joins us part-time, bringing with him a wealth of experience in Christian publishing and a longstanding commitment to amplifying theological voices from the Global South. He has served as Global Advocacy Manager at Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK), one of the UK’s leading Christian publishers, and has been closely involved in developing publishing initiatives in Uganda and Anglophone Africa.
Over the past two decades, Angus has immersed himself in the study and lived reality of Christianity in Africa. His work has not been confined to research alone; he has taught in theological colleges, collaborated with African scholars, and helped establish publishing ventures that seek to make African theological reflection more widely accessible, above all on the African continent. He was also a Research Associate at the Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide, pursuing research on the early history of Christianity in Uganda. He also explored how archival resources on Ugandan Christianity around the world could be made available to Ugandan researchers.
At the heart of Angus’s work are a number of deeply held convictions about Christian publishing—convictions that resonate strongly with the vision of Regnum Books and the wider mission of OCMS.
He has consistently highlighted the richness of theological insight emerging across Africa—what he describes as “living libraries” found not only in academic institutions, but in churches, communities, and everyday Christian practice. At the same time, he has been a thoughtful and constructive critic of the global publishing ecosystem, recognising how often it remains weighted against scholars and institutions in the Global South.
Perhaps most importantly, Angus has championed collaborative and innovative approaches to publishing—seeking models that move beyond inherited structures and instead foster partnership, accessibility, and mutual exchange. His involvement with networks such as the African Theological Network Press (ATNP) reflects this commitment in practice.
These priorities align closely with the vision of Regnum Books. As the publishing arm of the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies, Regnum has long sought to make rigorous, contextually grounded research available to the global Church. Through monographs, edited volumes, and shorter “mini-books,” Regnum provides a platform for voices that might otherwise remain unheard—particularly those emerging from the contexts where Christianity is growing most rapidly.
Angus’s experience and passion will be invaluable as we continue to develop Regnum’s role in this space. His commitment to ensuring that theological research is not only produced but also made accessible—across cultures, languages, and contexts—speaks directly to the heart of our mission.
We are delighted that Angus has joined us to lead Regnum Books in this new chapter. We look forward to the wisdom, insight, and collaborative spirit he brings, and to the ways in which Regnum will continue to grow and serve the global Church in the years ahead.
