Tom Harvey
Senior Research Fellow

Tom Harvey lives in Durham North Carolina. As a visiting research fellow at Duke University, he researches and is engaged in better understanding and enabling Global Mission work across many cultures and denominations. He has written extensively on issues of Church and State in China and Southeast Asia. He is author of Acquainted with Grief: Wang Mingdao’s Stand for the Persecuted Church in China as well as numerous articles on Christianity, Christian social engagement, and Mission. In particular, he examines ideological tensions in modern nations between the state and religious minorities.

After teaching in China for four years from 1987 to 1992, he returned to the USA to attend the University of Notre Dame and then went on to complete his doctoral studies at Duke University in theology and ethics with particular attention to issues of Church and State in China and the growth and influence of the churches of Asia. He was lecturer of Systematic Theology at Trinity Theological College, Singapore and served with the Presbyterian Church Singapore and the National Council of Churches, Singapore with special emphasis on the engagement of the church in society in work for the common good and the better understanding of the contribution of Singaporean Christians to society.

Tom is married to Judith who is an ordained priest of the Anglican Church. The have three children, 5 grandchildren, and one foster grandson. He is active in his garden and its design as a place of growth and revelation.
