This year’s OCMS Alumni Association Lecture brought alumni and friends together online for a thought-provoking presentation by internationally respected social anthropologist and author Dr Melba Padilla Maggay, introduced and hosted by Alumni Association coordinator Dr Terry Garde.
Drawing on decades of scholarship and experience in theology, culture and social transformation, Dr Maggay challenged listeners to think about Christian mission in a changing world. Her lecture, “On Missions from Alternate Centers,” explored how the global Church can engage today’s social, cultural and political realities while remaining deeply rooted in Scripture. She argued that as Christianity continues to flourish across the Majority World, new voices and contexts have much to teach the wider Church about faithful witness and mission.
Dr Maggay is President of the Institute for Studies in Asian Church and Culture, an internationally recognised speaker on culture, mission and development, and a long-standing friend of OCMS. She is also the author of the Regnum title Rise Up and Walk, which explores the relationship between religion, culture and the empowerment of the poor.
We are grateful to Terry for organising this year’s lecture and to all who joined us from around the world.
If you were unable to join us live, you can now watch the full lecture online, where Dr Maggay offers a compelling exploration of how the global Church can learn from “alternate centres” of Christian witness in today’s rapidly changing world.
