Roles and Relationships: Reflections on the Khalifah and the Image of God
Article
Transformation 1998 (Vol. 15, No. 1, page 18)

The gap between Christian and Muslim understandings of ‘what is a human being’ is more often sensed than explained. The world of Islam begins from the Qur’an: Man is Allah’s vicegerent (khalifah) on earth. The Christian understanding starts from Genesis: human beings are ‘in the image of God’. From this apparently small and subtle distinction flow large consequences. Sin, repentance, law and gender roles are all fundamentally affected.
