Depending on your nationality and country of residence, you may require a UK Visa to study at OCMS

You don't need a visa to study in the UK if you are a citizen of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland.

The Oxford Centre for Mission Studies is licenced by the Home Office as a Tier 4 sponsor. OCMS has been issued a sponsor licence number YTV5HEVE9 by the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) and holds a Tier 4 (General)sponsor licence.

If you are a national of any other country, you may need a visa to study in the UK.

If you are joining the Research Induction School please check if you require a visa.

You only need to apply for a Short-term Study visa in advance if you are a visa national. Check if this applies to you through the UK Government website.

If you are not a visa national, you can get the Short-term Study visa stamp when you arrive in the UK. However you might still want to apply in advance to make things quicker and easier at the airport.

A Short-term Study visa is always issued for a six month period. You cannot renew or extend your visa.

You should be able to submit your application to your nearest British High Commission or Embassy, once you have accepted a place to study at OCMS.

Please apply in advance of your travel to the UK. OCMS can assist you with your visa application by preparing a letter of introduction to the relevant section for submission with your application.

If you require a letter of introduction we will need the following information from you:

  • The full address where you intend to submit your application
  • Your full name (as it appears on your passport)
  • Your passport number and expiry date
  • Your date of birth
  • Your intended travel dates.
  • Where you will be staying in the UK

Please allow sufficient time for us to be able to prepare this letter and to get it to you whilst still allowing time for assessment and travel.

When to apply

You can apply for your visa up to three months before RIS starts. Do not apply before this date, as your application will be refused. You must apply for your visa at least two weeks before the RIS starts. If you cannot apply for your visa by this deadline, you may have to defer your studies and join OCMS at a later date.

Make sure you allow enough time for the visa to be processed before the start date of the RIS. It can take several weeks for your visa application to be processed and average processing times vary in each country. Lot of visa applications are made in June, July, and August so it can take longer to get your visa at these times because of the high demand.

If you think you will miss the start of your course because your visa has not been issued, you should let us know immediately. You may need to defer your studies to the next intake.

Tier 4 visa

Due to UKVI visa regulations OCMS cannot offer OCMS Stage students Tier 4 full-time enrolment into OCMS unless they are UK or EU nationals living in the UK Students wishing to study full-time at OCMS on a Tier 4 sponsored visa must be registered as a full-time student and enrolled with Middlesex University.

Some other types of visa can be used for study. This depends on your individual circumstances and what type of visa you have. You should discuss this with your OCMS when you are accepted to study.
