Reflecting on first three months

RIS October 2016Entering RIS and the OCMS community was full of the usual uncertainties of joining a new community, how and where do I fit? Our RIS was six men, no women. We got along well and enjoyed each learning to know one another. Our first meal together was at the Bird and Babe. It was there that we began to relax and get to know each other's stories. Our last meal together as a cohort was on an outing to Stonehenge. On the way back to Oxford, we went to an Indian restaurant and all ordered biryani. Polishing it off with gusto and much laughter we felt like a bunch of brothers! RIS at Middlesex

Following RIS I was able to stay on for another two months and to dive deep into library research and reading. I feel that I was able to make significant progress on my research topic. Participation in the life of the OCMS community in the kitchen, the lectures and the seminars was life giving. Ralph took me along to an Oxford United football match, mostly obscured by heavy fog. My wife Carol (who was along for the journey) and I loved the chapels and especially the final Christmas potluck on the day OCMS shuts down for the year. My recommendation to all future RIS students, do whatever you can to extend your stay and enjoy this wonderful community. In addition, you'll get a good start on research!

Thank you faculty and staff for making us feel welcome and for all the help and encouragement you gave!
