What we do
We are a small research institution based in the heart of Oxford at the beautiful St Philip and St James’ Church. Our academic programmes predominantly focus on the impact of faith based organisations and the Christian Church on development issues in the Global South, though we do have several students undertaking theological research. We have over 120 postgraduate students, with the majority originating from sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Asia. We were recently ranked 5th in the world and 2nd in the UK for PhDs focused on mission work.
Through our publications, including the journal ‘Transformation’ and Regnum Books, OCMS has been a major influence in shaping mission theology and strategy in the growing churches of the Two-Third World and the centre is now seen as a vital instrument in the development of post-graduate training.
OCMS nurtures relevant and engaged research for leaders on the cutting edge of Christian ministry and mission globally. By studying in an environment that is culturally sensitive and globally informed, global leaders can engage in groundbreaking scholarship that helps them to understand the nature of the issues they face in their own countries and ministries, and how better to deal with them.
Our programmes offer an attractive and affordable alternative for people from the non-Western world, and our approach allows scholars to remain active in their ministries throughout their studies, ensuring that their research is culturally relevant and contextually informed with only minimal disruption to families and ministries.
To equip leaders, scholars and institutions to bring holistic mission effectively and intelligently to the nations.
Our goal is to nurture relevant and engaged research for leaders on the cutting edge of Christian ministry and mission globally.
As a mission community, OCMS has built partnerships with mission organisations, churches and Christian organisations. For example, a number of OCMS Research Tutors are gifts of partnering mission organisations, such as OMF International, (US) Assemblies of God World Mission, and Presbyterian Church, USA. In addition, two churches sponsor faculty posts: Yoido Full Gospel Church, and Kwanglim Methodist Church, both in Seoul, Korea. Furthermore, many students are able to undertake their studies through scholarship partnerships with Christian organisations such as Langham Scholarship, Scholar Leaders International, Compassion UK, EMW Women Scholarship Programme, and Windle Trust.
