Individuality in the Gospel of John - Method of Research

In this seminar, I will present a summary of the method of my research. I investigate the presence of the idea of individuality of three characters in the Fourth Gospel: Nicodemus (3:1-21; 7:50-51; 19:39-42), the Samaritan woman at the well(4:1-42), and the man born blind (9:1-38). I employ two different but complementary interpretative approaches: Historical Narrative Criticism to study the syntactic and narrative elements of the characters to highlight the relevance of their traits to the plot of the narrative; and Sensory Anthropology to explore the relation between sensory dysfunction (the lack of one or more senses) and their individuality.
