Lecture at Ripon College, Cuddesdon

On October 1, 2019, Dr. Tom Harvey presented a lecture entitled ‘Reading Scripture as a Global Christian’ at the Ripon College, Cuddesdon, to the students taking Dr. Hywel Clifford course: ‘Themed Study Week on Holy Scripture for Year 2 and Year 3 Ordinands’. After presenting an overview of three approaches to the study of Scripture and highlighting the points of tension within such studies, Dr. Harvey exhorted the class to welcome Global Readings of Scripture because at times cultures other than one’s own may be much closer to the biblical world and therefore may be able to discern aspects of the text that can get missed by one’s own culture. Furthermore, reading Scripture globally provides opportunities for dialogue both intra and inter-cultural in nature, which is insightful, healthy and fosters mutual dependence between the Global Body of Christ in determining how best to read, interpret and apply Scripture.

As a way of demonstrating such a Global Reading of Scripture, three OCMS students presented how they read the text from their own cultural contexts. Doreen Alcoran-Benavidez highlighted how the Lord’s Prayer, from a Filipino perspective, underscores relationality and the fostering of community through food. Daniel Li focused on how the Chinese language, because it pictorially and latently contains the message of the Gospel, can serve as a preparatio evangelica. Stavan John highlighted how the Ascension of Jesus, from an Indian perspective, presents continuities and discontinuities about who Jesus is vis-à-vis avatars in Hindu theology.

The lecture was followed by a stimulating time of Q&A. The students at Ripon College along with their professor were very appreciative of the contribution Dr. Harvey and the OCMS students made to their class.
