Coronavirus and OCMS Recommendations

OCMS is an international community with students from all over the world, including those places most affected by the current epidemic of coronavirus. We are monitoring, and will follow, the advice of Public Health England and Wales in relation to how we manage this. Please see https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/news/498/novel-coronavirus-covid-19-update for this guidance.

OCMS recommends the following:

As of 13 Feb 2020, those coming from Wuhan and Hubei province in China, if well, are asked to self-quarantine for two weeks on arrival. This is not realistic for students coming to Oxford. If you have been in Wuhan or Hubei, our request is that you do not visit OCMS for a full two weeks after your visit to ensure you are not a carrier. Only travel to Oxford after two weeks if you are fully fit.

For other countries considered higher risk, please note the following UK government advice:

If you have travelled to or transited through mainland China, (excluding Wuhan or Hubei Province), Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan or Thailand in the last 14 days:

If you are well, you do not need to self-isolate. Your family do not need to take any precautions or make any changes to their own activities. However, if you become unwell, you should follow the self-isolation advice from PHE and immediately call: NHS 111 (England and Wales)

In the light of this, the OCMS request is as follows:

    1. We request all students from these contexts to consider whether they can postpone their residency till after the epidemic settles. This is not essential, just good sense.
    2. If you need to come at this time you will be very welcome but need to pay close attention to monitoring your health in the first two weeks of your stay and follow the government guidelines above.

We will let you know if the advice we are receiving changes.
