News from Nazareth Evangelical College: An Award for Rula Mansour

We are pleased that our seminary, Nazareth Evangelical College, announced a new faculty appointment. Dr. Rula Khoury Mansour joined the staff as Director of Peace Studies and lecturer on Theology of Reconciliation.

In 2018, Rula received her Ph.D. from the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies. The topic of her Ph.D. dissertation was an analysis and critical evaluation of conflict management approaches in Baptist churches in Israel between 1990 and 2016, in dialogue with the theology of reconciliation model of renowned theologian Miroslav Volf.

Prior to coming to the College, Rula was a public prosecutor for 13 years and the deputy head of the public prosecution office in Nazareth, the first Arab to hold such a post in Israel. She quit her prosecutor’s position to pursue a vision God had laid on her heart to promote reconciliation and peacemaking.

At the Association of Baptist Churches in Israel (ABC), we hosted Rula for an important workshop last month at Cana of Galilee Baptist Church. Rula shared with a select group of pastors and lay leaders about the findings from her research. It was probably the first time we heard about the root causes and nature of conflict in our churches, looking at the social, theological, cultural, structural, economic and identity-related factors. It was an eye-opening session indeed.

ABC presented Rula with appreciation at the general assembly held at the Baptist Church in Eilaboun on June 22. Saleem Hanna, Chairman of ABC, thanked Rula for her years of work studying our own churches and expressed a desire to continue this cooperation in the future.

Rula will work on developing a peace studies program at the college that will equip students with academic and practical tools to approach conflict and its management as they work for peace. In addition to teaching at the college, Rula will provide training to churches on practical and theological issues related to handling conflict.
